Klamath Manzanita

Arctostaphylos klamathensis, commonly known as Klamath manzanita, is a species of evergreen shrub native to the Klamath Mountains region of northern California and southern Oregon. This plant typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) and exhibits a dense, bushy form. Its branches are often twisted and gnarled, giving the plant a rugged appearance that is characteristic of many manzanita species. The bark is smooth and reddish-brown, which can peel away in thin strips, revealing a lighter inner bark.

The leaves of Klamath manzanita are leathery, alternate, and typically ovate to elliptical in shape, measuring about 2 to 5 centimeters (0.8 to 2 inches) in length. They are dark green and have a glossy surface, which helps reduce water loss in its native dry habitats. The plant produces small, urn-shaped flowers that are white to pale pink, blooming in clusters during late winter to early spring. These flowers are attractive to various pollinators, including bees. Following flowering, Klamath manzanita develops small, round berries that are approximately 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) in diameter. The berries are typically red and contain several seeds, serving as a food source for birds and other wildlife.

Klamath manzanita plays a significant ecological role in its native habitats by providing shelter and food for various animal species. It is well-adapted to survive in fire-prone environments, as its thick bark protects it from heat, and its seeds can remain dormant in the soil until conditions are favorable for germination after a fire.
