Also known as: Pinkbracted Manzanita

Arctostaphylos pringlei ssp. drupacea, commonly known as Pinkbracted Manzanita, is a subspecies of the Pringle’s manzanita native to the coastal regions of California and northern Baja California, Mexico. This plant typically thrives in chaparral and coastal scrub ecosystems, often found in sandy or rocky soils that provide excellent drainage. It exhibits a growth habit characterized by a low, spreading form, typically reaching heights of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet). The branches are often gnarled and twisted, contributing to its distinctive appearance.

The leaves of Pinkbracted Manzanita are evergreen, leathery, and typically oval to lanceolate in shape, measuring between 2 to 5 centimeters in length. They are dark green on the upper surface and lighter beneath, with a waxy coating that helps to reduce water loss. The flowers are one of the most notable features of this subspecies; they are small, urn-shaped, and usually appear in clusters, with a characteristic pink hue that gives rise to its common name. Flowering occurs in late winter to early spring, followed by the development of small, round drupes that are typically red to purple when mature. These fruits are an important food source for various bird species, which help in seed dispersal.

Pinkbracted Manzanita plays a significant ecological role in its native habitat, providing cover and food for wildlife. Its dense foliage offers shelter for small mammals and birds, while the flowers attract pollinators such as bees. The plant exhibits several interesting adaptations to its environment, including a thick, fire-resistant bark that allows it to survive and regenerate after wildfires, a common occurrence in its native range. Additionally, its deep root system enables it to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making it well-suited to the often dry conditions of its habitat.
