Also known as: Lanate Balsamroot

Balsamorhiza lanata, commonly known as Lanate Balsamroot, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, primarily found in the regions of eastern Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. This species typically inhabits dry, open habitats such as grasslands, sagebrush steppe, and rocky slopes, where it thrives in well-drained soils. The growth habit of Balsamorhiza lanata can reach a height of 30 to 90 centimeters (12 to 35 inches), forming a rosette of basal leaves that are covered with a dense layer of woolly hairs, giving the plant its characteristic lanate appearance.

The leaves of Lanate Balsamroot are large, lobed, and can measure up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) in length. In the spring, the plant produces striking yellow flowers that are arranged in a dense cluster atop a tall, erect stem. Each flower head can be up to 8 centimeters (3 inches) in diameter and consists of numerous ray florets surrounding a central disc. Following the flowering period, the plant develops achenes, which are small, dry fruits that contain seeds. These seeds are adapted for wind dispersal, aiding in the plant’s propagation across its native range.

Balsamorhiza lanata plays an important ecological role as a pioneer species, contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for various herbivores, including deer and livestock. The plant’s deep taproot allows it to access moisture and nutrients from deeper soil layers, making it well-suited for its arid habitats. Additionally, the presence of woolly hairs on the leaves helps to reduce water loss by minimizing evaporation, an adaptation crucial for survival in dry environments. Lanate Balsamroot has also been utilized by Indigenous peoples for its edible roots, which can be consumed after cooking, highlighting its significance in traditional diets.
