Also known as: Winged Water-starwort
Callitriche marginata, commonly known as Winged Water-starwort, is a perennial aquatic plant native to the shallow waters of North America, particularly in wetlands, ponds, and slow-moving streams. This species typically grows to a height of 10 to 30 centimeters, forming a dense mat of foliage that can provide important habitat for various aquatic organisms. The plant is characterized by its distinctive winged stems and narrow, linear leaves that can reach up to 10 centimeters in length. The small, inconspicuous flowers are borne in the axils of the leaves and are usually greenish or yellowish in color, followed by the production of small, flattened seeds that aid in its dispersal through water movement.
Ecologically, Callitriche marginata plays a vital role in aquatic ecosystems by providing cover and food for fish and invertebrates. Its growth habit helps stabilize sediment and improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients. While not widely utilized by humans, it can be beneficial in natural water gardens and as a natural filtration plant in constructed wetlands. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to thrive in varying water levels, allowing it to persist in fluctuating aquatic environments, making it a resilient component of its native habitats.
