Also known as: Vernal Water-starwort
Callitriche palustris, commonly known as Vernal Water-starwort, is a perennial aquatic plant native to wetlands across North America and parts of Europe. This species typically grows in shallow water or saturated soils, reaching heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. It exhibits a prostrate to ascending growth habit, forming dense mats that can cover the water surface. The leaves are narrow, linear, and often submerged, while the flowers are small and inconspicuous, usually appearing in clusters above the water. The fruit is a small, elongated capsule containing seeds that can disperse through water movement.
Ecologically, Vernal Water-starwort plays a significant role in aquatic ecosystems by providing habitat and food for various aquatic organisms, including invertebrates and fish. It can also help stabilize sediment and improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients. Human uses of this plant are limited, but it can be beneficial in natural water gardens and as a component of wetland restoration projects. One interesting adaptation of Callitriche palustris is its ability to thrive in varying water levels, allowing it to survive in both temporary and permanent water bodies.
