Also known as: Schreiber's Manzanita
Arctostaphylos glutinosa, commonly known as Schreiber’s Manzanita, is a species of evergreen shrub native to the coastal regions of California, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area and along the central coast. This plant typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) and exhibits a dense, rounded form. The stems are often twisted and gnarled, contributing to its distinctive appearance. The bark is smooth and reddish-brown, which is characteristic of many manzanita species.
The leaves of Arctostaphylos glutinosa are leathery, glossy, and dark green, measuring approximately 2 to 5 centimeters in length. They are arranged alternately along the stems and have a distinctive oval shape with a slightly serrated margin. The plant produces small, bell-shaped flowers that are white to pale pink, typically blooming in clusters during the late winter to early spring. These flowers are an important nectar source for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering period, the plant develops small, round berries that are a deep red to purple color when ripe. These berries are edible and are consumed by birds and other wildlife, playing a crucial role in the plant’s reproductive cycle by aiding in seed dispersal.
Schreiber’s Manzanita is well adapted to its native environment, often thriving in sandy, well-drained soils and areas with a Mediterranean climate characterized by wet winters and dry summers. It has developed a thick cuticle on its leaves to reduce water loss, an important adaptation for surviving in its often drought-prone habitat. Additionally, this species is fire-adapted, with the ability to resprout from its root system after fire events, a common occurrence in its native ecosystems. Schreiber’s Manzanita is also valued in horticulture for its ornamental qualities and is used in landscaping for erosion control and habitat restoration projects.
