Arctostaphylos hookeri ssp. ravenii
Arctostaphylos hookeri ssp.
Also known as: Presidio Manzanita
Arctostaphylos hookeri ssp. ravenii, commonly known as Presidio Manzanita, is a subspecies of manzanita endemic to the San Francisco Bay Area, specifically found in the Presidio of San Francisco, California. This evergreen shrub typically reaches a height of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) and exhibits a dense, spreading form. The plant is characterized by its smooth, reddish-brown bark and twisted branches, which contribute to its distinctive appearance. The leaves are leathery, glossy, and dark green, measuring approximately 2 to 5 centimeters (0.8 to 2 inches) in length, with a slightly revolute margin that helps reduce water loss.
The flowering period for Presidio Manzanita occurs in late winter to early spring, during which clusters of small, urn-shaped, white to pale pink flowers emerge. These flowers are important for local pollinators, including bees and other insects. Following pollination, the plant produces small, round berries that are typically about 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) in diameter. These fruits are edible, though they are not widely consumed by humans. Instead, they serve as a food source for various birds and mammals, playing a crucial role in the local ecosystem.
Presidio Manzanita has adapted to thrive in the sandy, well-drained soils of its native habitat, often found in coastal scrub and chaparral communities. It is well-suited to withstand drought conditions, thanks to its thick leaves and deep root system, which allow it to access moisture from deeper soil layers. This shrub is also fire-adapted, with the ability to resprout from the root crown after wildfires, a common occurrence in its native range. Due to its limited distribution and specific habitat requirements, Arctostaphylos hookeri ssp. ravenii is considered a species of conservation concern, highlighting the importance of habitat preservation for its survival.
