Roof’s Manzanita

Arctostaphylos manzanita ssp. roofii, commonly known as Roof’s Manzanita, is a subspecies of the manzanita native to the southwestern United States, specifically found in the state of California. This plant typically inhabits dry, rocky slopes and is often associated with chaparral and coastal scrub ecosystems. Roof’s Manzanita exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet), forming a dense, bushy structure with a rounded or spreading form. Its bark is smooth and reddish-brown, which is a distinguishing characteristic of the genus Arctostaphylos.

The leaves of Roof’s Manzanita are evergreen, leathery, and typically oval to lanceolate in shape, measuring approximately 2 to 5 centimeters in length. They are dark green on the upper surface and lighter beneath, often with a waxy coating that helps reduce water loss. In late winter to early spring, the plant produces clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers that are white to pale pink, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following the flowering period, Roof’s Manzanita develops small, round berries that are approximately 5 to 10 millimeters in diameter. These berries are typically red to dark purple when mature and serve as a food source for birds and other wildlife.

Ecologically, Roof’s Manzanita plays a significant role in its native habitat by providing cover and food for various species. The plant is well-adapted to survive in nutrient-poor soils and can withstand periods of drought, thanks to its deep root system and thick, waxy leaves that minimize transpiration. Additionally, like many manzanitas, Roof’s Manzanita is fire-adapted; it can resprout from its root system after wildfires, allowing it to thrive in fire-prone environments. This resilience contributes to its ecological importance, as it helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion in its native range.
