Indian Manzanita

Arctostaphylos mewukka ssp. mewukka, commonly known as Indian Manzanita, is a subspecies of the manzanita native to California, particularly found in the northern coastal ranges and the Sierra Nevada foothills. This shrub typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) and exhibits a dense, bushy form. The plant is characterized by its smooth, reddish-brown bark and twisting branches, which contribute to its ornamental appeal in natural landscapes and gardens.

The leaves of Indian Manzanita are evergreen, leathery, and typically oval to lanceolate in shape, measuring about 2 to 6 centimeters long. They are dark green on the upper surface and lighter green beneath, often with a waxy coating that helps reduce water loss. In spring, the plant produces clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers that are usually white to pale pink, attracting various pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds. Following the flowering period, Indian Manzanita develops small, round berries that are typically red to orange and serve as a food source for birds and other wildlife.

Ecologically, Indian Manzanita plays a significant role in its native habitat by providing shelter and food for various animal species. It is well-adapted to fire-prone environments, as its seeds require exposure to heat for germination, promoting regeneration after wildfires. Additionally, the plant’s deep root system allows it to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making it resilient during dry periods.
