Also known as: Pinemat Manzanita

Arctostaphylos nevadensis, commonly known as Pinemat Manzanita, is a species of evergreen shrub native to the western United States, particularly found in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California and parts of Nevada. This plant typically grows in dry, rocky soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. Pinemat Manzanita exhibits a low, spreading growth habit, often reaching heights of 0.5 to 1 meter and forming dense mats that can extend several meters in diameter. The plant’s woody stems are often covered in a smooth, reddish-brown bark, which contributes to its distinctive appearance.

The leaves of Arctostaphylos nevadensis are alternate, leathery, and typically oval to lanceolate in shape, measuring 2 to 5 centimeters in length. They are dark green and have a glossy surface, which helps reduce water loss in the arid environments where this species thrives. In late winter to early spring, Pinemat Manzanita produces clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers that are white to pale pink, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following flowering, the plant develops small, round berries that are approximately 1 centimeter in diameter, maturing from green to red when ripe. These fruits are edible and have been utilized by Indigenous peoples for food and medicinal purposes.

Pinemat Manzanita plays a significant ecological role in its native habitat, providing cover and food for various wildlife species. Its dense growth form helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion on steep slopes. Additionally, the plant has adapted to its environment through its ability to resprout after fire, a common occurrence in its habitat. This adaptation allows it to quickly recover and maintain its presence in the ecosystem following disturbances. The species is also known for its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, making it an important component of the chaparral and montane communities where it is found.
