Glossyleaf Manzanita

Arctostaphylos nummularia, commonly known as Glossyleaf Manzanita, is a species of evergreen shrub native to the coastal regions of California and Oregon, particularly in the areas of chaparral and coastal scrub ecosystems. This plant typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) and exhibits a dense, rounded form. The branches are often reddish-brown and have a smooth texture, contributing to the plant’s ornamental appeal. The leaves are notable for their glossy, dark green color, which can measure up to 5 centimeters (2 inches) in length and are oval to elliptical in shape, with a leathery texture that helps reduce water loss.

The flowering period of Arctostaphylos nummularia occurs in late winter to early spring, producing clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers that are typically white to pale pink. These flowers are attractive to various pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds, thereby playing a vital role in local ecosystems. Following the flowering stage, the plant produces small, round berries that are approximately 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) in diameter. These berries are edible and have been used by Indigenous peoples for food and medicinal purposes, although they are not widely consumed today.

Glossyleaf Manzanita exhibits several adaptations that enable it to thrive in its native habitats. Its thick, waxy leaves help minimize water loss, making it well-suited for drought-prone environments. The plant is also fire-adapted, with the ability to resprout from its root system after wildfires, which are common in its native range. This resilience allows it to maintain its ecological role in the landscape, providing habitat and food for various wildlife species while contributing to soil stabilization and erosion control.
