Serpentine Manzanita

Arctostaphylos obispoensis, commonly known as Serpentine Manzanita, is a species of shrub native to the serpentine soils of the central coast of California, particularly around San Luis Obispo County. This plant typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) and exhibits a dense, rounded form. Its growth habit is characterized by a twisting, gnarled structure, which is often a response to the harsh conditions of its native serpentine habitat. The leaves are evergreen, leathery, and glossy, measuring approximately 2 to 6 centimeters in length. They are typically dark green on the upper surface and lighter on the underside, with a distinctive rolled margin that helps reduce water loss.

The flowers of Arctostaphylos obispoensis are small, urn-shaped, and generally appear in clusters during the late winter to early spring. They are typically white to light pink, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following flowering, the plant produces small, round berries that are approximately 1 centimeter in diameter. These berries are a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife, playing a significant role in the local ecosystem. Serpentine Manzanita is well-adapted to its nutrient-poor, rocky soils, exhibiting a unique ability to tolerate heavy metals and low levels of calcium, which are common in serpentine environments.
