Otay Manzanita

Arctostaphylos otayensis, commonly known as Otay Manzanita, is a species of flowering plant in the family Ericaceae, native to a limited range in southern California, specifically within the San Diego County region. It is primarily found in the Otay Mountain area, where it thrives in chaparral and coastal sage scrub habitats. This species is adapted to dry, rocky soils and is typically found at elevations ranging from 300 to 1,000 meters.

Otay Manzanita exhibits a growth habit characterized by its shrub form, typically reaching heights of 1 to 3 meters. The plant has a dense, bushy appearance, with an irregular outline. Its leaves are evergreen, leathery, and alternate, measuring approximately 2 to 5 centimeters in length. The leaves are dark green with a glossy surface, which helps reduce water loss. In late winter to early spring, Otay Manzanita produces clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers that are white to pale pink, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following the flowering period, the plant bears small, round berries that are typically red to dark purple, serving as a food source for birds and other wildlife.
