Also known as: Greenleaf Manzanita

Arctostaphylos patula, commonly known as Greenleaf Manzanita, is a species of evergreen shrub native to the western United States, primarily found in the mountainous regions of California and extending into parts of Oregon and Nevada. This plant typically grows in well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils, often in chaparral or forest understory habitats. Greenleaf Manzanita can reach heights of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) and exhibits a dense, bushy form with a rounded crown. Its stems are often reddish-brown and exhibit a smooth texture, which is characteristic of the genus.

The leaves of Arctostaphylos patula are leathery, oval to lanceolate in shape, and measure about 2 to 6 centimeters in length. They are dark green on the upper surface and lighter beneath, often with a waxy coating that helps reduce water loss. In late winter to early spring, the plant produces clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers that are typically white to pale pink, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following flowering, the plant develops small, round berries that are approximately 1 centimeter in diameter. These berries are edible and serve as a food source for birds and other wildlife, thus playing a role in seed dispersal.

Greenleaf Manzanita has several adaptations that enable it to thrive in its native environment. Its thick, waxy leaves reduce transpiration, allowing the plant to conserve water in dry conditions. Additionally, the species has a deep root system that helps it access moisture and nutrients from the soil. The ability to resprout from the base after fire is another important adaptation, as it allows the plant to recover quickly in fire-prone ecosystems. Human uses of Arctostaphylos patula include its ornamental value in landscaping due to its attractive foliage and flowers, as well as its role in erosion control on slopes and disturbed areas.
