Also known as: Raiche's Manzanita

Arctostaphylos stanfordiana ssp. raichei, commonly known as Raiche’s Manzanita, is a subspecies of manzanita native to the coastal regions of central California, particularly within Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. This evergreen shrub typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) and exhibits a dense, bushy form. The bark is smooth and reddish-brown, which is characteristic of many manzanitas. The leaves are leathery, oval to lanceolate in shape, and measure approximately 2 to 5 centimeters (0.8 to 2 inches) in length. They are dark green and have a glossy appearance, which helps reduce water loss in its native dry habitats.

The flowering period for Raiche’s Manzanita occurs in late winter to early spring, producing clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers that are typically white to pale pink. These flowers are attractive to various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, playing a significant role in the local ecosystem. Following the flowering stage, the plant produces small, round berries that are approximately 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) in diameter, turning from green to a deep red or purple as they mature. These berries are edible and can be consumed by wildlife, including birds and mammals, which aids in seed dispersal.

Raiche’s Manzanita has adapted to thrive in nutrient-poor, well-drained soils, often found in chaparral and coastal scrub habitats. Its thick, waxy leaves minimize transpiration, allowing it to conserve water during dry periods. Additionally, the plant has a fire-resistant quality, with the ability to resprout from its root system after wildfires, a common occurrence in its native habitat. This resilience not only contributes to its survival but also plays an essential role in the ecological dynamics of fire-adapted ecosystems. While primarily valued for its ecological contributions, Raiche’s Manzanita is also appreciated in horticulture for its ornamental qualities and ability to thrive in low-water gardens.
