Aquatic Milkweed

Asclepias perennis, commonly known as Aquatic Milkweed, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southeastern United States, particularly found in wetland habitats such as marshes, swamps, and along the edges of ponds and streams. Its natural range extends from Virginia to Florida and westward to Texas. This species typically grows to a height of 0.6 to 1.2 meters (2 to 4 feet) and exhibits an upright, clumping growth form, with multiple stems arising from a central crown.

The leaves of Asclepias perennis are lanceolate to ovate, measuring 10 to 20 centimeters (4 to 8 inches) in length, and are arranged oppositely along the stem. They are characterized by a smooth margin and a glossy green surface, contributing to the plant’s overall aesthetic appeal. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are arranged in umbel-like clusters and are notable for their star-shaped structure. Each flower is typically white to pale green, with a distinctive arrangement of five petals that curve backward, and they emit a sweet fragrance that attracts various pollinators, particularly butterflies. The fruit is a follicle that can reach up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in length, containing numerous seeds that are equipped with silky hairs, aiding in wind dispersal.

Aquatic Milkweed plays a vital ecological role in its native habitat, providing nectar and habitat for pollinators, including monarch butterflies, which rely on milkweed species for their larval development. The plant’s ability to thrive in saturated soils allows it to stabilize wetland ecosystems and contribute to biodiversity.
