Asclepias lanuginosa, commonly known as Sidecluster Milkweed, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the central and western regions of North America, particularly found in areas such as the Great Plains and parts of the Rocky Mountains. This species typically grows to a height of 30 to 90 centimeters (approximately 12 to 35 inches) and exhibits an upright, clumping growth habit. The stems are often hairy and can be somewhat succulent, providing a robust structure that supports the plant’s flowering and fruiting processes.
The leaves of Asclepias lanuginosa are lanceolate to ovate, measuring 5 to 15 centimeters (2 to 6 inches) in length, and are characterized by a soft, woolly texture due to the presence of fine hairs. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are arranged in dense, umbel-like clusters at the top of the stems. Each flower features five reflexed petals that are typically pink to lavender in color, with a distinctive crown of hoods that house the reproductive structures. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, slender pods that contain numerous flat seeds, each with a tuft of silky hairs that aid in wind dispersal.
Ecologically, Sidecluster Milkweed plays a significant role as a host plant for the larvae of various species of butterflies, notably the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), which relies on milkweeds for food during its caterpillar stage. Additionally, the plant attracts a variety of pollinators, including bees and other insects, due to its nectar-rich flowers. Asclepias lanuginosa is also valued in restoration projects and native plant gardens for its ability to thrive in a range of soil types and its resilience to drought conditions, making it an important species for promoting biodiversity and supporting local ecosystems.
